A family filled with lies and deception
Family of Liars is a prequel to We Were Liars. Set on the island owned by the Sinclairs family, Beechwood Island. This novel is a continuation of We Were Liars. Where the main character is not Cadence but Carrie, Cadence's aunt. Starting with Johnny, who is a wandering spirit one of The Liars, who asks his mother, Carrie, to tell him about her past and the Sinclairs family.
Flashback story begins in the 1980s. Carrie is the oldest child among her siblings, Penny, Bess, Rosemary. Through Carrie's point of view, it is shown how Carrie and her siblings lived when they were teenagers on the island. Starting from facing the death of their youngest sibling, and being forced by their father to never bring up that incident. Until the death of a boy as a result of their romance.
Through a first-person perspective, Carrie shows difficulties in dealing with her family, such as the attitude of her father who always controls Carrie and forces her to have surgery to look more beautiful. Up to the manipulation and lies that exist in the family itself.
So how does Carrie deal with all of this? The point of view used in this novel is the same as the previous novel, namely using the first person perspective. However, what is different is that this story focuses more on Carrie's character development rather than the nuances of the Sinclair family's tense relationships. This can be seen from how Carrie deals with conflict and on the other hand, creates conflict in the Sinclairs family.
In this book, readers are presented with various plot twists that readers did not expect. An example is when there is a murder on Beechwood Island which is actually enough to make that part finished. However, it was presented with an unexpected surprise, as if there was a mastermind behind it all.
But it is undeniable that there are similarities that occur in this novel with the previous novel. Where the love story of Carrie and Pfeff is the same as Cadence and Gat. Then the main character has a mental/health illness. Harris' intervention caused his family members to suffer..
The depiction of the Sinclair family who use their privilege and wealth for their own benefit is still seen in their actions that control the world around them.
E. Lockhart is able to describe the characteristics of the characters with different uniqueness/differences. Like Carrie and her sisters, they have different personalities. Carrie looks out for her younger sibling, Penny who is selfish. And Bess who is still young and full of naivety.
This novel is suitable for readers who want to experience the conflict within a family full of manipulation and lies. Where the results of the conflict not only harm certain individuals but also all family members themselves.
The liars is not a nickname for an individual but for the family itself
